While the political campaign so far has not succeeded in preventing a constant increase in the number of ships listed in flag of convenience registers, the union campaign was able to conclude adequate minimum wages and conditions for more than 10,000 flag of convenience ships, more than 2,000 of them German (May 2009). In addition, the ITF has become the undaunted advocate for the interests of exploited and abused seafarers all over the world, irrespective of nationality or union membership. Every year, the ITF and its affiliated unions win millions of dollars worth of unpaid wages and compensation for accidents resulting in death or personal injury for seafarers who have no one else to turn to.
